Changing lives every day
Your heart is vital to your overall health and wellbeing. A healthy heart is essential for a long and happy life. Sadly, many problems can arise with your heart health, and the warning signs and symptoms may not be obvious. Thankfully Premier Cardiology & Vascular Associates are here to help and make a significant difference to your future. We are expert doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating problems within your heart and the surrounding arteries.
What is Cardiology?
First things first, Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study, diagnosis, and care of the cardiovascular system. Cardio relates to your heart, and vascular is the body’s network of vessels, veins and arteries which carry blood around your body. Your dedicated cardiologist will build up a picture of your overall heart health.
Review your medical records and find out about your health history.
Check and test your blood pressure, blood vessels and lung function.
Run diagnostic tests such as x-rays, blood tests, an electrocardiogram (ECG), or other specialized tests to determine the problem.
There are four main types of cardiology: invasive, non-invasive, interventional and preventative. Your personal cardiologists here at Premier Cardiology & Vascular Associates may use one or several techniques to diagnose and correctly treat your heart condition.
Non-Invasive Cardiology
As the name suggests, non-invasive cardiology identifies heart problems without using any needles, fluids, or other instruments inserted into the body. Using non-invasive procedures, your cardiac specialist can identify potential risks or existing conditions and recommend medication, treatment or lifestyle changes to help improve your heart health.
Non-invasive testing and procedures offered by Premier Cardiology & Vascular Associates include:
Nuclear cardiology
We harness safe radioactive imaging elements in this non-invasive study of cardiovascular disorders. Careful imaging techniques allow us to view different aspects of your heartand identify potential problems.
Echocardiography (ECG)
Painless ultrasound waves generate images of the heart and nearby structures. An ECG allows us to observe your heart’s capacity to pump blood, fight off infections, and reveal structural abnormalities that could have a significant impact on your cardiac health.
Doppler Echocardiogram
Echo (Transthoracic echocardiogram)
Carotid
Venous
Arterials
Abdominal Aortic Aneurism
Groin
Cardiac electrophysiology
The study and testing of the electrical currents which generate heartbeats.
Cardioversion
Stress Tests
Stress testing involves exercise and physical activity closely monitored by your cardiologist. By getting your blood pumping and your body moving, your cardiologist gains valuable information about how your heart performs under physical stress.
Treadmill Stress Test (GXT)
Nuclear Stress Test (Myocardial Perfusion Imaging)
Exercise Nuclear Stress Test
Pharmacological Nuclear Stress Test
Adenosine/Lexiscan
Heart monitors
Wearing a heart monitor is another way for your cardiologist to monitor your heart’s activity and capacity. Also referred to as Holter monitors or cardiac event recorders, externally positioned heart monitors record your heart’s electrical activity over a set length of time.
Electrophysiology
Telemetry
Holter
Event Monitor
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor
Pacemaker and ICD Checks
CT Scans
CT scans generate images used in determining whether you have heart disease or atherosclerosis, otherwise known as plaque build-up on your arteries.
Invasive Cardiology
Invasive cardiology uses safe open, or minimally invasive procedures using needles, fluids or catheters to locate and treat structural or electrical abnormalities within the cardiac system.
Invasive testing and treatments offered by Premier Cardiology & Vascular Associates include:
Angioplasty
Arterial plaque is a soft, sticky film comprised of cholesterol, calcium, fat, and other substances found in your blood. If too much plaque is clogging your arteries, your blood flow may become affected. Angioplasty is used to treat this condition and involves inserting a tiny balloon into your clogged vein to push plaque against the walls to increase blood flow and help your heart return to normal capacity.
Stenting
Often performed jointly with angioplasty, a cardiac stent is a tiny metal or plastic coil/tube which permanently holds a clogged vein open.
Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE)
Pacemaker insertion
Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)
Cardiac Catheterization (Coronary Angiogram)
Rotational Atherectomy (or Rotablator)
Directional Atherectomy (DCA)
Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)
Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)
Renal Artery Angioplasty
Coronary Stents
Drug-Eluting Stents
Interventional Cardiology
Interventional cardiology is a non-surgical treatment option that uses a catheter – a small, flexible tube. We use this treatment to repair damaged or weakened vessels, narrowed arteries, or other affected parts of the heart structure.
Common conditions treated by interventional cardiology by Premier Cardiology & Vascular Associates include:
Coronary artery disease
The narrowing of the arteries which supply blood and oxygen to the heart.
Heart valve disease
The valves which control blood flow into the heart’s chambers are not working correctly.
Peripheral vascular disease
Your heart can also be negatively impacted by clogged or hardened veins and arteries throughout your body.
Preventative Cardiology
As you would expect, preventive cardiology focuses on preventing or lowering patients’ risk of developing heart disease, having a first heart attack or stroke. Additionally, averting further issues in people who already have cardiovascular disease.
Traditional risk factors, such as cholesterol and blood pressure
Lifestyle factors
A detailed family history of heart disease
Imaging tests of the heart and blood vessels
Advanced blood tests, such as C-reactive protein and advanced lipoprotein testing, as necessary
